A lot of times, you might have to find somewhere to evaluate your international degrees, because your immigration lawyer, future employer, and future school may not tell you anything about it.
If you found this article, congrats,
because you might have googled “where to evaluate international degrees in USA” and this is the right place for you to get hands-on information in evaluation of foreign degrees.
Hence, the goal of this article is to help you save time and have a better sense of where to evaluate international degrees in USA for the year of 2024.
But first of all, let's see what official organizations say about it.
When you need an international degree evaluation for employment purposes, you may wonder what role the US government plays in this game,
or are there any government regulations stating who can be eligible for this service.
The answer is there’re no such regulations in terms of international degree evaluation in the US, and the U.S. Department of State
or the U.S. government of the entity doesn’t affiliate or endorse any foreign credential evaluation agencies. Even though their website does include two organizations, they still claim that
“The order in which names appear has no significance, and the links may be removed at any time at the discretion of the Department.”
With that said, having your international degree evaluated for work isn’t restricted by certain evaluation agencies.
Therefore, you can simply go to a trusted credential evaluation agency for your convenience.
When it comes to international degree evaluation for USCIS (immigration or work authorization purposes), USCIS seems to be more easygoing by saying: “In cases involving foreign degrees,
officers may favorably consider a credentials evaluation performed by an independent credentials evaluator who has provided a credible, logical,
and well-documented case for such an equivalency determination that is based solely on the noncitizen’s foreign degree(s)”.
That means any private agency that provides foreign credential evaluation services and degree evaluation services are accepted by USCIS.
For immigration purposes (green card, H1B, NIW, ect.), in most cases,
you will be recommended to do a general credential evaluation (document-by-document evaluation) at a credential evaluation service that’s experienced and has high approval rates.
Same as the Department of State, the U.S. Department of Education doesn’t recommend or endorse any credential evaluation services, and it also doesn’t advocate any association of evaluators.
However, if you’re using an international degree evaluation for school applications, what do schools say about it?
For major universities, they do have specific requirement regarding which credential evaluation companies you can go to.
Most of them require you to go to an NACES (National Association of Credential Evaluation Services) agency. Founded in 1987, NACES is a US organization that
accredits private credential evaluation companies that provide such services. To be part of this organization is a long process.
To know whether your school requires an NACES company or not, simply ask them before starting the credential evaluation process. Otherwise, don’t worry.
Some credential evaluation agencies,
including American Education & Translation Services,
will always ask or help you to confirm with your school in the first place. As a small business in this game, we are dedicated to be honest, transparent, and sincere to our customers although a lot of colleges or institutes still accept our credential evaluation.

There is no federal regulation of credential evaluation services. The U.S. Department of Education does not endorse or recommend any individual credential evaluation service or any individual association of credential evaluation services.
Use a credential evaluation service recommended by the employer, education institution or state licensing authority to which you are applying. If no specific credential evaluation service is recommended, you can search online to identify a credential evaluation service on your own.
Credential evaluations are not free. The cost will vary according to the complexity of the case and the amount of documentation you can provide.
Credential evaluations are done on an individual, case-by-case basis and take into consideration various factors. Different credential evaluation services might evaluate credentials differently, according to their criteria.
Credential evaluation services generally require English translations of any non-English documents. For details regarding requirements, consult the entity that will evaluate your credentials.
Credential evaluation services generally have in place a process to appeal their recommendations. If needed, make use of the appeals process provided by the credential evaluation service. (The U.S. federal government has no role in credential evaluation appeals.)
